Education Facility Water Damage Response

New Jersey

Background – Water Intrusion at School

In July 2022, an education facility in New Jersey had an HVAC system malfunction, causing the unit to freeze and letting the water line loose. Unfortunately for the school’s facility and maintenance team, the water damage occurred at some point over a weekend and by Monday morning it had caused significant property damage. 17 rooms on the second floor were flooded and the water had also leaked into the ceiling on the first floor into a handful of larger classrooms, hallways, and the cafeteria.

While there’s never an opportune time for water damage to occur at your school, university, or institution; at least normal classes weren’t in session in July due to summer break, right? Think again. The main floor of the school was being used for a summer camp, requiring the damage to be addressed fast so that the school could continue hosting its normal operations.

The Unlimited Restoration, Inc. team of commercial property restoration experts was immediately called in to the education facility to provide water damage response and mitigation services by the facility manager.

Process – Emergency Response and Mitigation

Within an hour of receiving the first notification of loss from the school, Unlimited Restoration was onsite to begin assessing the damage caused by the water intrusion. Two water mitigation equipped trailers and a fully staffed crew were dispatched to provide expedited emergency response. The water was extracted and drying equipment was placed to stabilize the property within the first 12 hours of URI being called.

Over the course of five days, Unlimited Restoration provided the following water damage response services to the school:

  • Removal of affected carpet and carpet adhesives
  • Removal of cove base in all affected rooms
  • 2-foot flood cuts and removal of plywood sheeting and wall insulation to ensure proper drying for affected walls
  • Disposal of all affected materials
  • Drying of affected flooring and walls
  • Antimicrobial cleaning of affected surfaces including flooring, walls, and some contents

In addition to the emergency response, demolition, and cleaning; the URI team also replaced affected ceiling tiles and duct wrap on the first floor of the school so that they could resume normal operations with the summer camp that was being hosted onsite.

Conclusion – Minimizing Disruption for Education Facility

Through expedited emergency response and skillfully prioritized project management, the Unlimited Restoration team was able to complete all necessary mitigation of this larger-scale water loss within less than a week for our education facility client. The school also had their first floor back to normal fast, successfully minimizing disruption for their summer camp participants and staff.
