When Should You Have Your Business’s Air Ducts Cleaned?

Several signs can indicate that it’s time to clean your air ducts:

• Diminished HVAC system performance: Are your utility bills increasing? Dirty ducts can cause your system to work harder and consume more energy. They can also shorten the unit’s life span.
• Rodent infestation and mold: Droppings and mold growth inside your air ducts can mean that your system spreads contaminants throughout your building.
• Dusty environment: If you notice high volumes of dust in the air or on furniture or office equipment, it could mean that your ducts are accumulating dirt and debris, and your HVAC system is blowing it out of the ductwork.
• Unpleasant smells: Foul odors emanating from your ductwork may mean there’s something deep within the system that requires cleaning.

Regular service is essential for ensuring the health of your duct system and meeting air quality testing requirements. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends an annual HVAC system inspection, which can determine if your air ducts need cleaning. You should also consider cleaning ductwork after a new construction or renovation project, as dirt and debris can accumulate inside the ducts. A catastrophic event like a flood or fire can also leave contaminants inside your air ducts.
